MY YORUBA BRIDE 1

written by Royal David

In Africa precisely, a traditional marriage is one that is highly respected by the families of the couples and as such cannot be done without. It’s also known in some places as the Native Law and custom.

We have different cultures and ethnic groups in Nigeria but today we’ll be looking at the Western part. I wouldn’t want to bore you with all the details of the Yoruba traditional wedding but will simply give you an idea of the things you’ll need to come with to ask for the hand of your Yoruba bride.

Below is a sample of an engagement list (it’s open to change depending on the family of the bride)

  • 2 decanter bottles
  • 2 bottles of honey
  • 4 cartons of assorted juice
  • 4 cartons of canned drinks
  • 2 cartons or packs of bottled water
  • 1 bag of salt
  • 1 bag of rice
  • 1 keg of groundnut oil/palm oil
  • 1 roll of sugar in packs
  • Salt in bowl
  • Aadun in bowl
  • 42 tubers of yam
  • 42 ataare
  • 42 eja osan
  • 42 obi ajoopa
  • 42 orogbo
  • 1 she goat
  • Baskets of mixed fruits
  • A Box
  • 2 set of shoes and bags
  • 2 set of lace and gele
  • Set of jewelries
  • 2 set of Ankara
  • Holy bible (for Christians)
  • Holy quran, prayer mat, white hijab, muslim rosary, and praying kettle (Muslims)

Hmmmmm! what a list, did you see that of Davido's elder sister in previous post, na wa o!
Next time we’ll be looking at the Dowry and monetary aspect.

THE TRADITIONAL MARRIAGE PHOTOS: PJ WEDS SUNNY

From the massive traffic at Festac town yesterday, you could tell that something was happening and the obvious questions were "what is happening", "who are they", "where're they from" And bla bla blah...lol...It's Josephine Enemor and Sunny Ihesiaba's traditional marriage. It was a colourful, classy and a typical igbo traditional wedding, as both couples are from the eastern part of Nigeria. Everyone was in red, white and gold attires especially the stunning bride in her gold lace, red george with circle patterned embriodery, and a stony glittering gold purse, the groom looking smart and dashing, men in red cap and beautiful maidens in array. I can go on and on about the event and you can be assured that it was funfilled as Royalty Okasions were in charge *wink*... Click HERE  to view their wedding website. The delta born and one of the beautiful daughters of Ibru; Uvie Ibru married her heartthrob Maxwell Herbert Peiletoday, who was dressed in a delta statetraditional attire together with his bride, yesterday at Tafawa Balewa Square, Onikan in Lagos. Most past and current state governors including Governor of Delta state Governor Emmanuel Uduaghangun, former governor of Ogun state Olusegun Osoba,  former Governor of Lagos State Bola Tinubu, Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State and several other dignitaries attended the traditional marriage.
